Know what you want

This must sound pretty obvious, but it is crucial that you actually decide exactly what you would like to get from any negotiation, before you even start. You can’t expect to earn a great deal if you walk onto the car lot and ask “What have you got”? If you want to get the best deal possible, it takes preparation and work. You need to invest time to do your homework first. The more prepared you are and the more you know about the vehicle the greater the possibility that you will manage to negotiate the best deal possible. You should know what best price you can get is.


It is also a good idea to know when to negotiate the deal. Car dealers are far more likely to offer a better price towards the end of the month, than they are at the beginning of the month. Research and find when the best time is to negotiate the best price. A holiday booked at the last minute, will cost you far more than one booked during off season, months in advance. Choosing the right time, when to negotiate, can and will save you a fortune.

Research and Understand their “Wriggle Room”

Most sales people work on commission and they have a minimum margin they can sell at. If you can find out the margin, which they are working on and how much wriggle room they have, prior to the negotiation; you are in a strong position to negotiate the best deal possible. To enjoy success at negotiating the best deal possible, always takes preparation. The more prepared you are and the more information you have, the better will be the deal you will manage to negotiate for yourself.

So as you can see, winning the best deal possible every time, is not only possible, but very likely, if you invest sufficient time into preparing beforehand. As the saying goes “Forewarned is forearmed”. Consistently winning the best deal possible, has nothing to do with luck and everything to with knowing what you want, understanding when the best time to negotiate is, knowing how much wriggle room the sales person has and ensuring you are sufficiently prepared, before entering into any negotiation.
